This Article Does Not Teach Belaying

Belaying is a life-critical climbing skill. Use this article as product education, not as instruction to teach yourself from a screen. Read the official RAMA instructions, learn from a qualified instructor or competent mentor, practise in a controlled setting, and keep control of the brake strand at all times.

Short answer

The RAMA Is a Simple Enhanced-Braking Belay Device

The Singing Rock RAMA is an intuitive belay device with enhanced braking, designed for gym climbing and single-pitch sport climbing. It works on a tube principle with no moving parts or lever, using its shape, rope path and carabiner interaction to create additional braking support under load.

That makes the RAMA a strong fit for climbers who want straightforward handling, smooth paying out, controlled lowering and a durable stainless steel braking surface. It is still not hands-free, automatic, or a replacement for good belay instruction.

Product Fit at a Glance

Best use

Gym and Single-Pitch Sport

Singing Rock positions the RAMA for gym and single-pitch sport climbing. That is exactly where it makes sense for most Rockit customers: straightforward belays, repeated lowers, and simple single-rope systems.

Rope range

8.7-11 mm Single Ropes

The RAMA is marked for 8.7-11 mm single ropes. Rope diameter, age, sheath condition, stiffness, dirt and moisture all affect how braking and lowering feel.

Weight and build

84 g, Stainless Steel Braking Surface

The device combines light alloy, plastic and stainless steel. The stainless steel braking surface is there for durability, longer service life and smoother control during lowering.

Carabiner pairing

Use a Locking HMS Carabiner

The instructions say to use a locking carabiner, preferably an HMS carabiner. Singing Rock notes that the RAMA works best with its BORA or OXY carabiners.

How it works

Enhanced Braking, Not Permission to Let Go

The RAMA's braking support comes from the device geometry, the rope path and the carabiner. When the rope is loaded correctly, the device creates a more secure braking position than a basic tube device. Because it has no moving cam, the action feels simple and easy to inspect.

The danger is treating that extra help as automatic belaying. The official instructions are clear that the free rope must not be released. Your brake hand, device orientation, carabiner shape and rope condition all remain part of the system.

  • Brake hand stays on: the free rope remains controlled throughout the belay.
  • Load it correctly: thread the rope in the indicated direction shown on the device and manual.
  • Check compatibility: confirm the rope and carabiner work correctly with the RAMA before use.
  • Practise lowering: lowering speed changes with rope diameter, wear and carabiner shape.

RAMA vs Tube Device vs ATC Pilot

Compared With a Tube Device

A basic tube device is simple and versatile, but it does not provide the same enhanced braking support. The RAMA keeps a familiar rope-handling style while adding a more supportive locking geometry.

Compared With the ATC Pilot

The RAMA and ATC Pilot are both simple enhanced-braking devices with no moving cam. The RAMA's official rope range extends to 11 mm, while the ATC Pilot is listed for 8.7-10.5 mm single ropes.

Compared With Cam-Assisted Devices

Cam-assisted devices use a moving cam to pinch the rope. The RAMA uses no lever or cam, which makes it mechanically simple, but it will not behave exactly like a Grigri-style device.

Compared With Guide-Mode Devices

The RAMA is built for single-pitch belaying rather than multi-pitch guide-mode systems. Choose a different device if direct anchor belaying of followers is part of your climbing.

Where the RAMA Shines

01

Beginner Belay Progression

The RAMA is approachable for new climbers learning under supervision because the handling is simple and the device supports good brake-side control.

02

Gym Lead Belaying

Many gyms prefer assisted or enhanced-braking devices for lead belaying. The RAMA fits that environment well when used with approved rope and carabiner combinations.

03

Single-Pitch Sport

For sport crags with simple single-rope belays, the RAMA gives a compact, durable setup for belaying, taking, catching and lowering.

04

Smooth Rope Payout

Singing Rock highlights the compact geometry and handle shape for faster, easier rope payout. That makes clipping feel less clumsy once the belayer has practised.

05

Controlled Lowering

The stainless steel braking surface is designed to support smooth, secure gradual lowering, provided the belayer maintains brake-side control.

06

Simple Inspection

No moving parts means fewer hidden mechanisms to inspect. You still need to check the surface, edges, deformation, corrosion and wear before using it.

Limitations

What the RAMA Does Not Do

The RAMA is strongest when used for the job it was designed for: single-rope belaying in gym and single-pitch sport climbing. It should not be stretched into roles where another device is more appropriate.

  • Not hands-free: never release the free rope while belaying.
  • Single rope only: use it within the manufacturer's single-rope range.
  • No guide-mode role: choose a suitable guide-mode device for multi-pitch anchor belays.
  • Not a substitute for coaching: the manual specifically requires competent instruction or supervision.
  • System dependent: braking depends on rope diameter, rope wear, carabiner shape and handling.

Before You Belay With It

Read the Instructions

The RAMA must be used only in the approved orientations shown by Singing Rock. Do not assume that technique from another device transfers perfectly.

Check Rope and Carabiner

Use a locking carabiner, preferably HMS, and confirm the rope/device/carabiner combination locks and lowers correctly before climbing.

Confirm the Rope Range

Make sure your rope is a single rope in the 8.7-11 mm range. Remember that listed rope diameters can vary slightly from the real measured diameter.

Do a Partner Check

Check harnesses, knot, belay loop, rope direction, carabiner lock, brake strand and communication before the climber leaves the ground.

Inspection and Care

Inspect the RAMA before and during use. The contact surfaces should be smooth and clean, with no burrs that could damage the rope. Deformation, corrosion or considerable wear means the device should be retired.

Singing Rock notes that the lifetime is not strictly limited, because use history and condition matter more than a simple age number. Frequent use, poor storage, moisture, heat, dirt, corrosion, excessive loading and a single extreme event can all shorten the safe working life of the device.

Who Should Consider It?

Good fit

Newer Belayers With Instruction

The RAMA is a strong first assisted-braking option when a beginner is learning from someone competent and practising real brake-hand discipline.

Good fit

Sport Climbers Who Want Simplicity

If your climbing is mostly single-pitch sport or gym lead belaying, the RAMA gives a compact and simple setup with extra braking support.

Bad fit

Multi-Pitch Guide-Mode Needs

The RAMA is not the right answer for direct anchor belays, guide mode, half ropes or twin rope systems.

Bad fit

Anyone Looking for Automatic Safety

No belay device turns poor attention into good belaying. If a climber is not ready to control the brake strand, they are not ready to belay independently.

Bottom line

Rockit's Preferred Beginner Belay Device for a Reason

The Singing Rock RAMA is simple, durable and well matched to gym and single-pitch sport climbing. Its enhanced braking makes it friendlier than a plain tube device for many newer belayers, while its no-moving- parts design keeps it easy to inspect. The tradeoff is focus: use it for the job it was designed for, with the right rope, the right locking carabiner, and a belayer who has been taught properly.
